Your Time Will Come

Everyone's journey through life is different, and it goes the same with publishing. No one way is right, they are all just different.

I've been reminded of this recently. It's easy to see the success of others and wonder when yours will come. You may feel resentful or jealous towards those reaching their goals before you. That's okay. It's what you do with those emotions that's important. It's okay to step away and take the time you need to work through your feelings. It's an emotional road. I don't think it's cool to make other people feel guilty of their success though.

As I've mentioned before, my start in broadcasting was not easy. I was rejected by many radio stations, repeatedly. With the ability to prerecord breaks, those overnight spots that were usually given to new announcers to hone their skills have become practically nonexistent. It's a hard industry to break into especially with some bigger stations simulcasting the same programs on all their stations.

But guess what? I still got a job in broadcasting.

My journey was different from others I graduated with. Some got jobs right out of school. Some of those jobs I would have loved (especially the one at Much Music) and, yes, I was jealous. Some people I graduated with never got into radio or television.

My path was paved with lots of volunteering, freelancing, and finally a part-time job at Broadcast News (now Canadian Press). From there, I got a full time job as a news director at a radio station. It took several years, but I did it.

The path to being published is the same. You have to get your hands dirty, do the work, and keep going even when you feel like packing it in...and there will be many times you consider giving up.

I have author friends who were published by small presses, and I'm delighted for them. I have a close friend who got an agent and is out on submission, and I'm thrilled for her. I love celebrating with them and hearing about their successes. As publicist for Pen and Kink Publishing, I help put other people's books into the world, and it's wonderful to be part of that. I'm glad I've reached a point where I can do that without feeling bitter towards them. I think of it as, if they can do it, so can I.

I'm not saying I'm always positive as I go along my way. I have my down days, like everyone else. Sometimes I do need to step away because it can be overwhelming. But that's when I draw on the support of my writer friends. They help pick me up and keep going.

Faithful Is Here!

I'm so happy to help launch Michelle Hauck's second book of the Birth of Saints series today. Michelle does so much for the writing world by hosting contests and mentoring.

If you love fantasy, this is definitely a series for you!

The next volume in the Birth of Saints series is available now!

Following Grudging--and with a mix of Terry Goodkind and Bernard Cornwall--religion, witchcraft, and chivalry war in Faithful, the exciting next chapter in Michelle Hauck's Birth of Saints series!

A world of Fear and death…and those trying to save it.

Colina Hermosa has burned to the ground. The Northern invaders continue their assault on the ciudades-estados. Terror has taken hold, and those that should be allies betray each other in hopes of their own survival. As the realities of this devastating and unprovoked war settles in, what can they do to fight back?

On a mission of hope, an unlikely group sets out to find a teacher for Claire, and a new weapon to use against the Northerners and their swelling army.

What they find instead is an old woman.

But she’s not a random crone—she’s Claire’s grandmother. She’s also a Woman of the Song, and her music is both strong and horrible. And while Claire has already seen the power of her own Song, she is scared of her inability to control it, having seen how her magic has brought evil to the world, killing without reason or remorse. To preserve a life of honor and light, Ramiro and Claire will need to convince the old woman to teach them a way so that the power of the Song can be used for good. Otherwise, they’ll just be destroyers themselves, no better than the Northerners and their false god, Dal. With the annihilation their enemy has planned, though, they may not have a choice.

A tale of fear and tragedy, hope and redemption, Faithful is the harrowing second entry in the Birth of Saints trilogy.

A world of chivalry and witchcraft…and the invaders who would destroy everything. The North has invaded, bringing a cruel religion and no mercy. The ciudades-estados who have stood in their way have been razed to nothing, and now the horde is before the gates of Colina Hermosa…demanding blood. On a mission of desperation, a small group escapes the besieged city in search of the one thing that might stem the tide of Northerners: the witches of the southern swamps. The Women of the Song. But when tragedy strikes their negotiations, all that is left is a single untried knight and a witch who has never given voice to her power. And time is running out. A lyrical tale of honor and magic, Grudging is the opening salvo in the Book of Saints trilogy.
